Stay at Casa Laguna and Attend the Tall Ships Festival

August 30th, 2010

One of our favorite late-summer events is the Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point, September 10, 11, and 12. This event is not just for kids and has something for everyone, even if you’re not into history or sailing. There are blacksmiths and scrimshaw artists and handsome pirates and winsome wenches. The Ocean Institute allows you to get up-close-and-personal with a variety of sea creatures. And this is a rare opportunity to tour the tall ships themselves, or even sail out to sea aboard an authentic high-masted brigantine. There’s also an arts and crafts show, music and dancing, and food galore. Admission starts at $10 each for adults, but there are a variety of packages depending on how adventurous you want to be—all the way up to a battle cruise that, for $65 per adult, puts you out on the high seas, right next to the cannon’s roar. Learn more about the Tall Ships Festival at http://www.tallshipsfestival.com/overview.html. If you’re plan to stay at Casa Laguna that weekend, just let us know at the time you make your reservation and we’ll help you arrange for tickets, schedules, and transportation.

Casa Laguna is a Pround Sponsor of the OC Ride for Aids

August 3rd, 2010

Calling all cyclists. Casa Laguna Inn & Spa is a proud Gold Sponsor of the inaugural Orange County Ride for Aids (OCRA) and we’re looking for five cyclists to ride in our front-of-the-pack-priority team.

OCRA will be fully supported with Rest Stops and Lunch. Medical Staff and Bike Mechanics will also be along the route to keep you and your bike going! The ride will start and end at the Saddleback College campus in Mission Viejo, located off of the I-5 Freeway at 28000 Marguerite Parkway.

OCRA offers both a Century (100 miles) and Metric Century (62 miles) ride. Starting at the Saddleback College, the ride travels through south Santiago Canyon, Tustin and Irvine, the Newport Beach Back Bay, Corona del Mar south to Laguna Beach and Dana Point before returning to the original starting point in Mission Viejo.

The money generated by sponsorships such as Casa Laguna’s will help the AIDS Services Foundation Orange County provide services to the thousands of men, women and children in our community affected by HIV/AIDS.

To learn more about the Orange County Ride for Aids, check out their web site http://ocaidsride.com/  or give them a call at 949.809.5700. You can also call me, Kathryn Mace, General Manager of Casa Laguna Inn and Spa, and I will put you in touch with the right people to help get you on our team.

Don’t ride? You can still go to the OCRA web site and become a sponsor or give a donation of any amount to this very worthy cause.

Late Evening Tapas and Martinis at Sorrento

July 18th, 2010

One of our favorite places to grab a drink and a light supper is Sorrento Grill, in downtown Laguna Beach. During the off-season, we were there at least once a week for their half-price 5-7PM happy hour. Now that the festivals are in full swing and many of the downtown restaurants are packed with tourists early in the evening, Sorrento has moved their happy hour post-sundown, when the downtown sidewalks clear out a bit and many people are enjoying the Pageant of the Masters. Sorrento has $3, $5 & $7 food & drink specials Sunday through Thursday from 8PM to closing, and Friday - Saturday from 9PM to closing. From their “Small Plates” Menu, we love the Grilled Lamb Chopsicles and the Herb Shrimp. We’ve always been fans of the James Bond “Vesper” martini, which is very hard to find in Orange County, and the guys at Sorrento make it perfectly. You can take a look at a representative menu on their website http://sorrento-grille.com but keep in mind the menu does change and you’ll always find something new and delicious, whether you go for happy hour or a full blown dinner.

Casa Laguna’s “Chef’s Garden” Will Provide Fresh Tomatoes and Herbs

April 24th, 2010

Casa Laguna’s ”Chef’s Garden” is fully planted and growing. We have three varieties of heirloom tomatoes, including Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, and Brandywine, all grown from seed. Fresh herbs are a very important part of Chef Josh’s culinary creations, and the garden will provide basil (three kinds), oregano, thyme, sage (two kinds), rosemary, lavender, tarragon, cilantro, and a variety of mint. Also, our blackberry bushes are already starting to bud, so we’re hoping for an early crop this year. Casa’s guests can expect some wonderful new menu items made with these fresh, home-grown ingredients. Watch this blog for new pics and updates as the garden grows.

Reviewing the House of Big Fish and Ice Cold Beer

We recently had the opportunity to try Laguna’s newest restaurant, with the very unusual but perfectly descriptive name, House of Big Fish and Ice Cold Beer. We’ve been to more than a few coastal fish joints, so we pretty much had formed a picture of what the place would look like, and we were right on the money. HBFICB has a great location downtown on Pacific Coast Highway, in the upstairs spot formerly occupied by Aegean Café. The windows are a bit small, but there are ocean views and no doubt some great sunset views from the perimeter tables. This is not a place for a quiet romantic evening. The music is loud and so are the often boisterous patrons. About ¼ of the tables were occupied by families with “active” children. The tables are classic fish joint distressed wood with a gloss finish and no tablecloths. The large trifold menus remain on the table, and you’ll need some time to peruse the oddly scattered boxes of specials and combos. My husband ordered the crab-crusted tilapia, which arrived atop a large pile of rice and grilled veggies that filled the plate from edge to edge. HBFICB is not about formality and presentation; it’s about eating fish and drinking beer. My husband is a long-time fan of tilapia, and has experienced a wide variety of presentations. He immediately pointed out that, in this case, the crab “crust” was less crust and more “mush,” probably due to the addition of a very thin sauce. However, he did say that it was perfectly seasoned and quite tasty. He liked the seasoned rice as well, but found the grilled veggies had a bit too much char taste. As for me, well, to be fair, I’m not one to judge a fish joint. I was just along for the experience and visuals. Like many fish houses, HBFICB has a very limited menu of non-seafood items, mostly steaks and sandwiches. I had a sausage sandwich that wasn’t exceptional—but then, in a place that specializes in seafood, I wouldn’t expect it to be. Bottom line—we were there early on a Tuesday night and the place was nearly filled with patrons, all of whom seemed to be enjoying the beer, the big fish, and the informal atmosphere. The House of Big Fish and Ice Cold Beer is exactly what it was designed to be—and it appears to be satisfying its niche.

Stay at Casa Laguna and Tour Laguna Beach Aboard Dana Wharf’s 60-foot OCean Adventure Catamaran

February 28th, 2010

t_170_x_170_9080Sure, Laguna Beach has great sun and sand and art. But we also have a great history of famous residents and breathtaking residences. Now you can see historical Laguna from the sea, aboard Dana Wharf’s 63-foot OCean Adventure luxury catamaran. (Get it? OCean, as in Orange County, the OC?) There’s no Gilligan on this 3-hour tour, but you will see stars homes, world renowned architecture, beautiful cliffs and beaches, and probably a dolphin or two or twenty. And the cruise ends with a glass of wine from Laguna Canyon Winery. What more could you want for less than $50 per person? Come stay with us and we’ll make the arrangements for you. To learn more about the cruise and what you’ll see, check out the Coastline Pilot article or go straight to Dana Wharf’s reservation website.

Chef Cale Falk Wins Casa Laguna’s 2010 Culinary Challenge

Chef Peter O'Keefe; Casa Laguna Owner Francois Leclair; Challenge Winner Chef Cale Falk; Casa Laguna General Manager Kathryn Mace; and current Casa Laguna Executive Chef Joshua Robers.

Cale Falk, former Casa Laguna chef and prior Gold Medal winner at the 2008 Select Registry Inn-Credible Breakfast Cook-off, took home “top breakfast” honors at our 2010 Culinary Challenge on Thursday February 18, 2010. A panel of six prestigious judges sat poolside and watched as the three chefs battled it out, then they sampled each selection and marked their ballots for what would be a very close contest.

Chef Peter O'Keefe's "Eggs Benedicte Belly Up"

Chef Peter O’Keefe, who won the 2007 Select Registry Silver Award while working at Casa Laguna, received the most points for creativity and menu appropriateness with his “Eggs Benedict Belly Up” – a beautiful dish featuring pork belly “tater tots”, served with a sunny side up egg perched atop brioche and finished with hollandaise sauce and corn foam.

Chef Roberts' “South Laguna Benedict”

Our current culinary master, Chef Joshua Roberts, grabbed top points for overall taste with his signature “South Laguna Benedict” – comprised of fluffy poached eggs sitting atop a whole wheat ravioli stuffed with Portobello and shallot filling, served with brown butter hollandaise and roasted asparagus wrapped in pancetta.

Chef Falk's Winning PlateBut it was Chef Falk, with his Asparagus Flan and Herb Comfit Potatoes topped with Poached Eggs and Crispy Asparagus, who squeaked out the overall win by just one point!

The culinary challenge kicked off Casa Laguna’s 10-year anniversary, with our founder/owner Francois Leclair acting as master of ceremonies, and former co-owner Paul Blank servings as one of the judges. The rest of the judging panel included Fifi Chao, Food Reviewer for the Orange County Business Journal,; Laguna Beach Mayor Elizabeth Pearson; President of the Laguna Beach Visitors and Convention Bureau, Karyn Phillipsen; and special guest judges long-time regular Casa Laguna guests, Shauna and Dave Weiner, who got married at the inn four years ago.

Watch for Chef Falk’s winning recipe on the cover of our upcoming cook book; and, on our menu this summer. We thank all of our chefs for helping make Casa Laguna a “foodie” destination.
